HOW DO I RENEW MY ITIN?

HOW DO I RENEW MY ITIN?

Do I need to renew my ITIN?

Yes,if you need to file a tax return in 2021 and your ITIN has expired or will expire before you file in 2021, IRS recommends you submit your renewal application now to prevent potential delays in the processing of your return. If you use an expired ITIN on a U.S. tax return, it will be processed and treated as timely filed, but without any exemptions and/or credits claimed and no refund will be paid at that time. You will receive a notice explaining the delay in any refund and that the ITIN has expired.

Remember, an ITIN needs to be re-validated every five years. If you don’t use your ITIN for three consecutive years, it’s considered expired.

Renewing your ITIN is the same process as applying for a new ITIN. However, if you mail in your renewal application, you can simply send along a form W-7 with supporting documents, without attaching a tax return.

Your ITIN may expire before you file a tax return in 2021. All ITINs not used on a federal tax return at least once in the last three years will expire on December 31, 2020.

If you need to file a tax return in 2020, IRS recommends you submit a Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, or Formulario W-7 (SP), Solicitud de Número del Identificación Personal del Contribuyente del Servicio de ImpuestosInternos, now to renew your ITIN. As a reminder, ITINs with middle digits 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, or 87 that expired in 2016, 2017, 2018, or 2019 can also be renewed

Requirements to Renew ITIN

If you want to renew your ITIN, then you have to submit Form W-7, the Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. The form should be submitted with the necessary documentation. The documents need to prove your identity and foreign status. So, you may need to submit your passport, and/or other several documents.

These could be:

  • Birth certificate
  • National ID card
  • Visa
  • School records
  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services photo identification
  • ID card for the U.S state
  • Foreign driver’s license
  • U.S. driver’s license
  • Foreign military ID card
  • U.S. military ID card
The ITIN renewal process does not require a tax return, so keep that in mind as well. In addition, if you are required to file a return, you must do so as part of your renewal application. This will help you avoid any delays in receiving a refund from your insurance company. Don't forget to submit Form W-7 at the same time as your ITIN-eligible relatives.

Only the originals of your identification documents should be used for submission. Alternatively, you could submit copies of the original documents from the issuing agency.

Make sure the document is also current and not out of date before submitting it. The expiration date should also be included. There is no expiration date on documents that are submitted to the IRS, so they can be accepted for up to 12 months after the application. In addition to your name, your documents should include a photograph of yourself.

The passport is no longer a sufficient form of identification for dependents, especially if there is no date of entry. For as long as the dependent is stationed outside of the United States, this benefit is available. There are additional documents that each person will need to bring with them, depending on their age.
